Driving in Bulgaria: Vignettes, Parking, Mountain Roads and Road Rules

Bulgaria drives on the right. A rental can be useful for villages and natural sites, while central Sofia is often easier by metro. Prepare for electronic road charges and mountain conditions rather than judging a route by distance alone.

Choosing a rental

Bring the original driving licence, passport, any required international permit or translation and a suitable card in the main driver’s name. Confirm requirements for your licence country and obtain permission and cover for cross-border travel.

Turning at signals

There is no general right turn on red. It requires an authorising sign or signal, yielding and a clear path.

An ordinary green does not necessarily protect a left turn: yield to opposing traffic and pedestrians under the junction’s arrangement. Do not enter a blocked junction merely because the signal is green.

Priority and roundabouts

At equal-priority junctions, give way to the right; trams have particular priority rules. Priority-road and give-way signs change the arrangement.

Roundabouts circulate anticlockwise, but the shape alone does not determine priority. Inspect entry signs. Signalling does not authorise cutting from an inner lane across an occupied outer lane to exit.

Speed categories

Ordinary passenger-car limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 outside them, 120 on expressways and 140 on motorways unless otherwise signed. These are different road categories, not speeds chosen according to how empty a road looks.

Trailers and other vehicle categories have different limits. Slow through villages and roadworks and near pedestrians, maintaining a safe gap even when others are impatient.

Electronic vignettes

Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need an e-vignette on the charged road network. It is linked to the registration country and plate rather than a windscreen sticker. Check or buy through BGTOLL before entering that network.

Verify validity dates and registration details. Check existing rental coverage before buying twice. A car-and-trailer combination exceeding 3.5 tonnes may need an additional trailer vignette; heavier vehicles use a different charging system.

Parking and the Sofia Plus app

Sofia has paid parking zones with time limits. The Sofia Plus app supports choosing the area and plate and paying by a supported method. Confirm activation, hours and the exact local tariff. The municipal parking service provides access to the app and payment.

Short-code SMS may not work with a foreign SIM. Use the app or another authorised local option instead. Paying the wrong zone is not valid, and continuing payment does not necessarily extend the maximum permitted stay.

Sofia’s low-emission restrictions

Sofia restricts more-polluting vehicles in central areas during winter. The last verified 2025/26 arrangement restricted environmental groups I and II in the small ring and group I in the large ring.

For a winter visit, consult the current municipal access arrangement and confirm the vehicle’s category with the supplier. These groups are not simply an assumed Euro number from the model. Do not presume foreign plates exempt you.

Lights, belts and equipment

Daytime lights are required. In tunnels, darkness and poor weather, select appropriate lighting and check that rear lights are on rather than relying solely on front daytime lights.

Check the required reflective vest, warning triangle, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher. Occupants need seat belts and children need suitable restraints. Choose a non-drinking driver and do not hold a phone while driving.

Winter mountain driving

For Bansko, Rila and higher areas in winter, reserve suitable winter tyres and inspect tread depth rather than relying on a vague winter-package label. Chains may be required by signs and conditions.

Allow extra time, carry warm clothing and keep fuel or charge in reserve. A short mapped route can be slow and snowy. Do not bypass closures or take untreated roads merely because navigation suggests them.

Signs and site access

STOP requires a complete stop; a give-way triangle requires yielding to priority traffic. A signed public-transport lane is not a convenient empty rental-car lane.

For natural sites, establish road suitability and access permissions. Hotel parking is not automatic, and a shared courtyard or pavement is not a parking space without clear permission.

Fuel and return conditions

Match 95/98 petrol or diesel to the fuel flap rather than pump colours. Confirm E10 compatibility where it is offered.

An unattended pump may reserve funds before settling the actual fuel amount. Retain the receipt and plan a refuelling stop before return if the contract requires a full tank.

The Eldrive charging app

Register in the Eldrive app, add a payment card, select the station and connector and follow the start instructions. A linked RFID tag is another option. Receipts and charging history remain in the account.

Check power, connector, tariffs and post-charging idle fees; a temporary card authorisation may apply. Match Type 2 or CCS to both car and charger and plan a mountain-route backup. A subscription bought in one country need not apply in another.
