Driving in Canada: Provincial Rules, Winter Roads, Parking and Tolls

Canada drives on the right and uses kilometres per hour. Licensing, signals, child restraints and winter equipment are provincial or territorial matters, so a rule learned in one part of the country may not apply in another.

Choose a suitable rental

Compare Canada rentals on DiscoverCars, checking mileage, one-way fees, glass and tyre cover, winter equipment and any US border permission. Allow enough luggage space and comfort for long distances.

In Toronto or Montréal, collecting the car when leaving the city may avoid paying for a central hotel, parking and an unused rental simultaneously.

Licence and documents

Bring your original licence, passport, deposit card and any required international permit or translation. An international permit supplements rather than replaces your licence. Supplier acceptance and permitted visitor periods vary.

Ontario requires an international permit for visits exceeding three months. Do not assume the same period applies in Québec, Alberta or British Columbia.

Right on red

Ontario generally permits a right turn on red after a complete stop and yielding unless a sign prohibits it. It is optional, not compulsory. Keep the crosswalk clear and check cyclists and pedestrians carefully.

Québec permits it in many places, but right-on-red is prohibited throughout the island of Montréal. Prohibition signs elsewhere can include operating hours.

Left turns on green

A steady green may also release oncoming traffic. Yield when turning left where paths conflict; a separate left arrow can indicate a protected phase. Colour alone does not establish an unobstructed turn.

Ontario also permits left-on-red from a one-way street onto another one-way street after stopping and yielding, unless prohibited. This is not a general left-on-red permission.

Flashing green varies

In Ontario, a flashing green can indicate an advance phase before opposing traffic is released. In British Columbia, it identifies a pedestrian-controlled signal and does not promise a protected left turn.

Refresh the rules when crossing provincial boundaries. Where signals stand across the intersection, stop at the near-side stop line, not beside the distant signal pole.

All-way stops and roundabouts

At a four-way stop, everyone stops fully. The first to stop proceeds first; simultaneous arrivals yield to the vehicle on the right. A left-turning vehicle also yields to opposing straight-through traffic.

Roundabouts circulate anticlockwise. Follow entry yield signs, select a lane beforehand and avoid cutting across another lane at an exit. Do not stop inside to invite an entering car forward.

Yellow school buses

In Ontario, a stopped school bus with overhead red lights flashing or an extended stop arm requires traffic in both directions to stop. Opposing traffic is exempt where a physical median divides the roads. Stop at least 20 metres behind the bus.

Amber signals warn you to prepare to stop. Do not pass while stop signals remain active, and look carefully for children before proceeding. Other provinces have their own distances and exceptions.

Streetcars and emergency vehicles

In Toronto, stop at least two metres behind the rearmost door while streetcar passengers board or alight into the roadway without a passenger island. Never squeeze between a door and the pavement.

Maximum signs indicate speed limits; school and work zones may depend on hours or flashing lights. Slow and change lanes when required and safe near stopped emergency vehicles, following the province’s move-over law.

Green P and Mobicité apps

Use the Green P app at participating Toronto spaces: choose the signed location, vehicle and duration and confirm payment. In Montréal, the Mobicité app replaced P$ Mobile and pays for identified parking spaces.

Mobicité transactions are separate: do not assume a payment made early is added to the end of your existing session. Read street-cleaning, snow-removal and residents-only signs even when an app accepts payment.

407 ETR and other tolls

407 ETR near Toronto is electronically tolled. Rental bills go to the supplier, which may add administration fees. Establish the arrangement in advance; there is no cash booth at the exit.

The government-owned eastern section from Brock Road to Highway 35/115 has been toll-free since June 2025. Other bridges and roads have separate arrangements. National-park admission is not an ordinary road toll.

Winter tyres and mountains

Québec’s winter-tyre period is 1 December–15 March for locally registered vehicles, including rentals, subject to exemptions. Signed British Columbia routes require winter equipment, generally 1 October–30 April, with some sections ending in March.

Request equipment appropriate for the route, not merely a winter-ready label. Four-wheel drive does not shorten braking on ice. Check closures, wildfire and smoke conditions before park journeys and keep an alternative day or route.

Fuel and octane

Fuel is sold in litres, but North American pump octane uses AKI rather than the RON system used in many countries. Follow the car’s label and supplier instructions rather than directly comparing unfamiliar numbers.

At self-service pumps, select and authorise payment before filling. If a foreign card fails a postal-code check, pay inside instead of inventing an address. Temporary card authorisations may exceed the final fuel purchase.

EV charging

In Québec, the Circuit électrique app selects chargers and starts sessions using account credit, which can be funded by credit card. Check power, tariffs, charging time and parking charges. Other networks may need separate accounts.

J1772, CCS1, NACS and occasionally CHAdeMO differ from European Type 2/CCS2. Check the actual car and approved adapter; not every Tesla Supercharger serves every vehicle. Cold weather, hills and heating require reserve range.

Families and long journeys

Child-restraint requirements vary locally. Reserve for age, height and weight and check installation. Legal cannabis sales do not make impaired driving legal.

On remote roads plan fuel, water and reception, and slow for wildlife. Do not approach animals for photographs. When tired, take a proper break instead of extending the day by several more driving hours.
