Driving in Greece: Road Rules, Athens Parking, Tolls and Island Ferries

Greece drives on the right and measures distances in kilometres. A car can be useful beyond the city, but central Athens is often easier by metro and on foot. Pay particular attention to the new urban speed default, roundabout priority and ferry conditions before booking a rental.

Rent for the part that needs a car

For central Athens, walking, metro journeys and occasional taxis can be easier than parking. A wider route through villages and beaches may benefit from a car. Include accommodation parking and tolls in the comparison.

Licence and documents

Carry your valid original licence, passport or appropriate identification, and any required IDP or translation. Requirements vary with the issuing country, licence format and supplier; do not generalise from another traveller’s acceptance at a different desk.

An IDP supplements the original licence. Check the deposit card conditions and register every driver. Keep the rental contract and assistance number accessible.

The urban speed default changed

Since 1 January 2026, the default in built-up areas is 30 km/h. A 50 km/h default remains for specified roads: one-way roads with at least two marked lanes, two-way roads with at least two marked lanes each way, and divided two-way roads. Posted signs can set another limit.

For ordinary passenger cars outside built-up areas, limits are generally up to 90 on ordinary roads, 110 on expressways and 130 on motorways unless otherwise signed. Narrow or winding conditions often require much less.

Signals and left turns

There is no general right turn on red. On a normal green signal, a left turn must yield to opposing traffic; watch the pedestrian crossing on the road you enter.

Follow the signal for your lane. A conditional indication such as flashing amber does not grant full priority. Keep the junction clear when traffic ahead is blocked.

Junctions and roundabouts

At an otherwise uncontrolled junction, traffic from the right generally has priority. At a roundabout entrance with a give-way or stop sign, yield to circulating traffic. Without such a sign, the right-priority rule may favour entering vehicles.

Do not infer priority from the circular layout alone. Circulate anticlockwise, use the marked lanes and indicate before leaving without cutting across an occupied lane.

Parking restrictions

Athens distinguishes visitor spaces from resident and special-use spaces. Read the sign rather than relying on pavement colour alone. A continuous yellow kerbside line prohibits stopping and parking; a broken line can mark restrictions.

Do not block pavements, ramps or accessible spaces, even if other drivers do so. At a village or beach, a proper parking area is preferable to obstructing a narrow access road.

Using the myAthensPass app

In the myAthensPass app, register, add payment and credit, select location, plate and duration, then activate parking. Confirm success and the correct rental plate, including a foreign registration when applicable.

Municipal visitor parking generally has a three-hour maximum. App renewal does not override a signed limit. Check the zone’s operating hours and use a garage for a longer stay.

Central Athens access restrictions

The seasonal Daktylios scheme restricts vehicles in central Athens, including odd/even plate rules and defined exemptions or permits. A rental is not automatically exempt from every restriction.

The latest published season ended on 24 July 2026. For an autumn or winter journey, have the supplier check the rules for your dates and the specific vehicle’s paperwork. A hotel reservation does not automatically permit entry into a controlled area, pedestrian street or bus lane.

Tolls and transponders

Many motorways collect tolls at plazas rather than through a single nationwide passenger-car vignette. Without an active transponder, choose a signed card or cash lane and keep euro cash as backup.

Participating transponders work across networks through GRITS, but discounts and account conditions differ. Ask the rental company about service fees and billing. An unidentified device on the windscreen is not proof that you can use an electronic lane.

Ferries and electric vehicles

Confirm the rental company permits ferry transport and that damage cover and assistance extend to loading and the destination island. Separate island rentals may sometimes be simpler.

Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways require electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to have no more than 40% battery charge when boarding. Declare the correct vehicle type, plan charging after arrival and do not assume on-board charging is available.

Fuel and EV charging

Unleaded petrol may be labelled Αμόλυβδη with an octane number. Diesel or Πετρέλαιο κίνησης identifies road diesel. Match the fuel-flap label and ask before filling if unsure.

The PPC blue app locates charging points, shows connectors and starts charging, including guest use under its service terms. Check tariffs, card pre-authorisation and time-based charges. Island coverage differs from Athens, so arrange confirmed hotel charging or a backup station.

Mountains and seasonal weather

Northern and mountainous Greece can have snow and ice. From October to April, authorities can require anti-skid equipment according to conditions. Arrange suitable equipment with the supplier and learn to fit it before travel.

In summer carry water and never leave children in a parked car. Follow fire, flood and road-closure instructions instead of a navigation shortcut. Allow space and avoid overtaking without a clear view on narrow roads.

Children, alcohol and distractions

Use seat belts and suitable child restraints. Reserve by the child’s age, height and weight and check the installation before leaving the rental desk.

The general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, reduced to 0.2 for novice and professional drivers and motorcycle riders. Avoid alcohol when driving. Do not use a handheld phone; stop legally to adjust navigation. Call 112 in an emergency.
