Electricity in Jordan: Socket Types, Adapters and Desert Camps

Jordan has several socket types, so confirm your accommodation’s connections before relying on a single adapter. The mains supply is 230V at 50Hz. Plug shape matters, but voltage compatibility and a proper earth connection matter too.

Several connection types

Types C, D, F, G and J occur in Jordan. The photographs illustrate F with round openings and side earth contacts, and G with three rectangular openings. C has two slim round pins; D and J have different three-round-pin arrangements.

One socket does not establish the fittings throughout a hotel or desert camp. Ask your host for a photograph when reliable compatibility is essential.

What to pack

Bring a good-quality adapter for the type your accommodation confirms. European and British heads are useful combinations, but do not guarantee compatibility with every socket in Jordan.

Equipment that needs earth must retain an effective earth connection. A two-pin adapter cannot add protection that the socket or connection lacks. Do not remove pins or force a plug.

Check the input rating

An INPUT 100–240V, 50/60Hz charger suits the local voltage and frequency. Read the input, not the OUTPUT rating describing power delivered to the device.

If only a different voltage is listed, check with the manufacturer before connecting. This is especially important for appliances bought in 100/110/120V countries.

Adapters do not convert voltage

A shape adapter cannot reduce 230V to 100 or 110V. Equipment rated only for a lower voltage can be damaged and dangerous if connected directly.

For hairdryers, kettles and other high-power heating appliances, using accommodation-provided equipment is usually simpler. A small travel converter may not support the load.

Universal-looking sockets

A socket accepting several plug shapes still needs secure contacts, correct earthing and a suitable rating. Avoid loose, hot or scorched outlets and never insert an object to open a shutter.

A reputable multiport USB charger can reduce the number of adapters within its total rating. Do not daisy-chain extension blocks.

Wadi Rum camps

Ask whether your tent has an outlet, its operating hours and whether power comes from solar equipment or a generator. Electricity at camp may mean only a communal area.

Arrive with a charged power bank and offline maps and booking details. Medical equipment or refrigerated medicine requires a specific continuous-power and backup arrangement.

When the power fails

Ask reception whether the issue is a switch, room-card control or wider outage. JEPCO publishes 116 for its service area, including Amman and parts of central Jordan. Elsewhere, ask your host which local distributor applies.

No unverified nationwide outage map is presented here. A hotel generator does not establish that every room outlet or air conditioner has backup.

Charging on the road

A vehicle USB port may not keep up with navigation and several devices. Use a suitable quality car charger and cable, and keep batteries and phones out of the sun in parked vehicles.

EVs require compatible charging equipment. A phone adapter is not an EV charging solution, and charging at accommodation needs explicit permission and a suitable installation.
