Electricity in Cyprus: Type G Adapters, Voltage and Charging

Cyprus normally uses British-style Type G sockets and 230V mains. Many chargers need only a plug adapter, but equipment compatibility must still be checked. This guide covers the Republic of Cyprus; the north’s electricity services are operated separately.

Type G sockets

Type G has three rectangular openings and matching pins in a triangular layout. Many outlets have a separate on/off switch. The photographs illustrate both the connector and typical switches.

A generic two-round-pin continental European adapter is not the normal local connection for Cyprus.

Choosing the right adapter

A British Type G plug generally fits directly. Continental European C/E/F, North American A/B and Israeli H shapes need suitable adapters. A manufacturer-supplied interchangeable UK head can be used where designed for the charger.

Preserve earth for equipment that needs it. Never insert objects into a socket’s upper opening to defeat the safety shutters or improvise a two-pin connection.

Voltage and frequency

The nominal supply is 230V at 50Hz. Check each appliance’s rating, even if other devices from the same country work.

An INPUT rating of 100–240V, 50/60Hz includes this supply. An OUTPUT figure such as 5V or 20V describes the charger’s output to the device, not acceptable wall voltage.

Adapters do not change voltage

A plug adapter changes only the connection shape. A 110/120V-only appliance is not made suitable for Cyprus by fitting it into an adapter.

If the rating excludes 230V, ask the manufacturer about suitable conversion for the device’s power and type. For hairdryers and other heating equipment, accommodation-provided alternatives are often easier than an unsuitable travel converter.

Switches and bathroom outlets

If a charger does not work, first check the outlet switch and whether the room-key card controls its circuit. Confirm actual charging before leaving the room.

A shaver-labelled bathroom outlet is not a general high-power supply. Do not use it for a kettle or hair straightener. Stop using a loose, unusually hot or scorched connection and contact the property.

Charging a family’s devices

A reputable multiport USB charger with the correct input range can reduce the adapter count. Check its total power for your combination of phones, camera and laptop, and carry the appropriate cables.

Avoid chains of extensions and adapters. A connection adequate for a phone may not be rated for heating appliances. Required earth continuity must be preserved throughout.

Faults and scheduled interruptions

The EAC faults and scheduled-interruptions service lets you select the relevant district. Restoration times are estimates. The EAC app also carries interruption information; 1800 is listed for reporting faults.

These services cover EAC’s network, not electricity operations in the north. If only your room is affected, contact the property before assuming a regional outage. Do not open electrical panels or attempt socket repairs.

Remote stays and backup needs

Take a charged phone power bank for a long outing and keep essential travel information available offline. For a remote rural stay, discuss electricity arrangements ahead if you depend on particular equipment.

Medical devices need a specific discussion with the manufacturer and property about voltage, earth and backup. An EV requires an authorised suitable charging facility; a spare balcony socket is not permission to charge a car.
