Mount Blue Sky (formerly Evans) Scenic Byway and Summit Lake

Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, known as Mount Evans when we visited, climbs into alpine scenery above 4,300 metres. Beyond the tree line, wide mountain views open up around low-growing vegetation adapted to the cold.

The drive was beautiful but demanded concentration: the road is narrow and winding, with sections without guardrails. Drive slowly, adapt to conditions and stop for photographs only where it is safe.

During our visit, which was held in the second half of September, it was no longer possible to drive the last 5 kilometers to the top of the mountain. Hence, the highest point we reached is the spectacular Summit Lake, where several hiking trails can be started. We made a brief trip to the shore of the lake and climbed a little on the nearby mountain to see the lake from above.

We then continued on the return trip and stopped for a short circular route of half an hour for the alpine gardens:

The road is seasonal and can close because of weather even in summer. Vehicle access currently requires an advance timed reservation through Recreation.gov. Federal recreation passes are not accepted under the current operating arrangements. Check road status, accessible areas and reservation options before setting out, and download the confirmation because reception is limited.
