Electricity in Russia: Plugs, Adaptors and Safe Charging

Russia commonly uses Type C and F connections with a roughly 220–230V, 50Hz supply. Check voltage as well as plug shape, particularly with equipment designed only for North American or Japanese mains. A socket that physically accepts a plug does not necessarily provide an earth connection.

Recognising C and F

A slim Type C plug has two round pins. A Type F socket has a recessed round face and side earth contacts. Older properties may also have unearthed two-pin sockets.

Use the photographs to distinguish slim, thick and earthed connectors. Do not force a thick plug into an older outlet.

Voltage and frequency

Sources describe the supply as 220V or 230V. Equipment explicitly rated INPUT 220–240V, 50Hz covers that relevant range; inspect every appliance.

A 100V-only or 120V-only appliance is not suitable for direct connection through a shape adaptor. Frequency-sensitive equipment also needs manufacturer approval for 50Hz.

Choosing an adaptor

Bring an adaptor matching your own plug and the local F connection. Preserve earth for appliances that require it; a two-pin adaptor does not provide that protection.

A compatible slim Europlug may fit directly. British, North American, Australian and Israeli three-pin plugs need the appropriate physical adaptation.

Read INPUT

A charger marked INPUT 100–240V, 50/60Hz is normally compatible with the mains supply when connected safely.

USB OUTPUT values describe the power delivered to the device, not the mains input accepted by its charger. Photograph labels before packing.

Adaptors versus converters

A travel adaptor changes connector shape, not voltage or frequency. High-power appliances such as hairdryers need the correct voltage and power rating.

Set any manual dual-voltage selector before connecting, following its instructions. Seek manufacturer advice for essential equipment rather than experimenting with transformers.

Hotel and apartment charging

A suitable multi-port USB charger reduces the number of adaptors, provided its combined output meets your needs. Bring a spare cable and keep charging equipment dry and ventilated.

Stop using a loose, scorched or overheating socket and inform the host. Do not open electrical panels or defeat a tripping protective device.

Cold weather and phone access

Cold can reduce battery performance. Keep phones and power banks within the manufacturer’s permitted temperature range.

Save essential addresses, tickets and payment information offline. Internet disruption is not necessarily a power failure, and downloading a replacement app at the last minute may not be possible.

Power outages

Ask the accommodation whether a failure affects the room, building or neighbourhood. The Rosseti outage information covers the Moscow region, not all Russia.

Arrange backup power in advance for essential medical equipment. Never operate a generator indoors or touch fallen cables or wet electrical equipment.
