Blagoevgrad History Museum

The Regional History Museum is in Varosha, at 1 Rila Street. Its displays cover subjects including archaeology, nature and the region’s history and culture. During our 2017 visit we also looked for the story of the local Jewish community and felt that its absence from the exhibition was a significant omission.
Bulgaria’s Holocaust history is complex. Public protest and intervention by public figures and church leaders helped prevent deportations from Bulgaria’s pre-war territory. At the same time, Bulgarian authorities deported 11,343 Jews from territories they had occupied; almost all were murdered at Treblinka.
Check the museum’s opening arrangements and available exhibitions. Our impressions concern the display we saw, not every exhibition that may be presented today.
