Berczy Park: a cheerful little stop in downtown Toronto

A playful fountain, a few photographs and an easy continuation to St. Lawrence Market.

We stopped at Berczy Park during our morning in Toronto. The dog fountain made this small downtown space a particularly enjoyable stop: something to look at, smile at and photograph without planning a major visit.

The fountain belongs to the park redesign unveiled in 2017 by landscape architect Claude Cormier and his team. Its 27 dogs and one cat replace the solemn central hero of a traditional monument with a lively neighbourhood gathering. The everyday presence of dogs and their owners helped inspire the design.
Walk around the fountain rather than taking just one photograph from a distance. The different figures and jets of water reward a closer look, and the small details are part of the joke.

This is a small park, not a half-day attraction. For us, 10–15 minutes is a sensible allowance for looking around and taking photographs.
Its location makes it particularly easy to combine with St. Lawrence Market. We would treat the two as parts of the same downtown walk rather than separate excursions.
Practical notes
Allow roughly 10–15 minutes for a brief stop.
Combine it with St. Lawrence Market.
