Ottawa’s Parliament district: an exterior walking visit

Large stone buildings, open spaces and a sense of the capital’s scale.

We walked among the Parliament buildings, the Supreme Court and nearby government buildings. It was an impressive area to explore from outside.

The fire of 1916 destroyed much of Centre Block during the First World War. The survival of the library is one of the details that gives the complex’s architecture a more dramatic story.

Parliament Hill is the focus, but our walk extended beyond it. The Supreme Court and surrounding buildings make this a district rather than a single stop.

The scale is part of the experience: substantial façades, open spaces and views across central Ottawa. You do not need to identify every institution to appreciate the setting.

Our account is of an exterior visit. Interior tours require separate planning, and access can change with building works, events and security arrangements.
From here, continue to Major’s Hill Park and ByWard Market for a varied day on foot.
