Money in Poland: Zloty, Cards, Tipping and Tax-Free Shopping

Poland belongs to the European Union but uses the Polish zloty, not the euro. Cards handle much of an ordinary city visit, while a modest cash reserve covers smaller purchases and unexpected gaps. Pay attention to the currency selected at a terminal and to the final price after fees, rather than just the advertised exchange rate.

Notes, coins and the PLN symbol
PLN and zł mean Polish zloty. One zloty is divided into 100 groszy. Coins are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 groszy, plus 1, 2 and 5 zloty; banknotes are 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 zloty. Smaller notes are more practical for incidental purchases than a 500-zloty note.
Use the converter to get a sense of value in your chosen source currency. Its result is indicative and does not include your card issuer’s charges, ATM fees or an exchange counter’s margin.
How cashless can a visit be?
Visa and Mastercard are widely useful in hotels, supermarkets, chain shops and many restaurants. A supported phone wallet can work at contactless terminals, but keep the physical card and its PIN available too. An individual card or terminal can still fail.
A few hundred zloty can be a starting cash reserve for a couple, adjusted to the route rather than treated as a fixed daily budget. Small stalls, toilets, tips or a small accommodation provider may need cash. Carry a separate backup card instead of putting every payment option in one wallet.
Choose the transaction currency deliberately
A terminal may offer conversion into your home currency. This is a separate conversion service, not necessarily the best rate. Usually it makes sense to select PLN and compare your own card’s foreign-currency terms instead of accepting the terminal’s conversion automatically.
Check the amount and currency before approving. Choosing English on a screen is not the same as choosing pounds, dollars or euros for payment. A phone wallet also does not remove the underlying card’s foreign-transaction fee.
ATMs and exchange counters
A Kantor is a currency-exchange office. Compare the final amount of zloty you receive after any charges. An attractive headline rate can apply to a different transaction direction, amount or currency than the one you need. Keep the receipt and count your cash before leaving.
At an ATM, review the operator fee and any conversion offer separately. Request a withdrawal in PLN and cancel if the terms are unsuitable. Use a reputable, well-lit location and check your account afterwards. Multiple small withdrawals can multiply fixed fees.
BLIK is linked to participating banks
BLIK operates inside participating banking apps rather than as a universal standalone wallet for any visiting cardholder. A typical code payment uses a six-digit one-time code and confirmation in the bank app. Other BLIK functions have their own arrangements.
Do not rely on setting it up during a short visit with an unsupported overseas account. Look for ordinary card payment when a checkout offers BLIK. Never send a code to someone contacting you unexpectedly, and read the transaction details before approving.
Paying for taxis and app rides
Where available, the Uber app, Bolt app or Freenow app lets you choose the service and payment method before requesting a ride. Confirm the pickup point, vehicle and fare information. If the ride is set to charge your card in the app, do not pay the same fare again in cash.
For a street taxi, establish card acceptance beforehand and use a licensed service with the meter or a lawful agreed fare. At an airport, follow the marked authorised taxi arrangement. Keep the trip record and receipt until you have checked the final charge.
Tipping without paying twice
Around 10% is a common restaurant tip for good table service, not a compulsory addition to every purchase. Some restaurants already include a service charge, particularly for groups. Check the bill, and ask to add a card tip before the terminal payment is completed.
For taxis, rounding up or adding a small amount for helpful service is optional. A restaurant percentage need not be applied automatically. When paying cash, make the intended amount clear and check the change before leaving your chosen tip.
VAT and the displayed price
The standard VAT rate is 23%, with reduced rates including 8% and 5% for qualifying categories. Ordinary consumer prices generally include VAT. Brutto means tax-inclusive; netto means before tax and is more common in business quotations.
A 123-zloty price subject to 23% VAT contains 23 zloty of tax, not 23% of 123. Check accommodation totals for breakfast, parking and any applicable local fee, which may be listed separately from the room rate.
Who can claim a shopping refund?
Travellers permanently resident outside the EU may qualify for TAX FREE on eligible goods from participating shops. The document must total at least PLN 200 including VAT. Ask the shop to prepare the tax-free document at purchase and retain the receipt.
Goods must leave the EU unchanged in your personal luggage by the end of the third month after the purchase month. For a September purchase, that means the end of December. This is not a refund scheme for consumed restaurant meals or hotel stays.
Export validation before departure
Keep the purchases and documents accessible for customs inspection. If goods are in checked luggage, establish the inspection procedure before handing the bag over. With an onward flight inside the EU, clarify where export is validated for your particular baggage arrangement.
After validation, follow the retailer’s or refund operator’s steps. Service charges can reduce the refund, and payment may take time. Keep copies until the money arrives rather than treating an anticipated refund as a guaranteed discount at checkout.
