Our visit

In the evening we walked through Kabukicho and the narrow lanes of Golden Gai. The lights and density look cinematic, but this remains a working nightlife district rather than a tourist set.

We chose to wander, take in the atmosphere and continue to the wagyu dinner we had planned, rather than enter a tiny bar at random.

What to know

Golden Gai is a dense network of very small bars; some charge a cover fee or cater mainly to regulars. Kabukicho is broader and louder, with restaurants, cinemas and clubs.

Planning the visit

Respect no-photography signs and do not photograph people closely without permission. Before entering a bar, check prices, cover charges and accepted payment methods.
