Kiyomizu-dera and the Walk through Higashiyama

Our October 2025 visit to Kiyomizu-dera and the Walk through Higashiyama, with current visitor information and practical planning tips.

Kiyomizu-dera and the Walk through Higashiyama

Our visit

We ended our Gion and Higashiyama route in the Kiyomizu-dera area. The climb through the historic streets was as much a part of the experience as the temple itself.

We arrived after a long day that had begun in Arashiyama, so we kept a measured pace rather than turning every building into a separate stop.

What to know

Kiyomizu-dera was founded more than 1,250 years ago and is known for its wooden stage overlooking Kyoto. Hours vary by season and special evening illumination events.

Planning the visit

Check the official same-day hours and arrive before final admission. The approach is steep and the area becomes very busy during blossom and autumn-color seasons.

For a wider route beyond the cities, compare transport and car-rental options in advance and decide what the itinerary actually requires.
