Kinkaku-ji: Kyoto’s Golden Pavilion

Our October 2025 visit to Kinkaku-ji, with current visitor information and practical planning tips.

Our visit

On our final Kyoto day we went to Kinkaku-ji. The Golden Pavilion reflects in the pond, and the short route around it reveals several angles.

This is a busy, highly organized site: visitors move in one direction, pause at viewpoints and continue. Despite the short visit, the view justified the journey.

What to know

The temple’s formal name is Rokuon-ji. The present pavilion was rebuilt after a 1950 fire, and the site has formed part of Kyoto’s World Heritage property since 1994.

Planning the visit

Visitors do not enter the pavilion and follow a fixed route. Arrive at opening to reduce crowds and check the official site for current hours and fees.
