Our visit

From the bamboo grove we continued to Iwatayama Monkey Park. The climb is steeper than the map suggests, but at the top we found free-roaming monkeys and a broad view over Kyoto.

Visitors enter a building to feed through mesh while the monkeys remain outside. That arrangement made the encounter feel less intrusive than many animal attractions.

What to know

The animals are Japanese macaques living on the mountain. The park enforces clear distance and feeding rules, and severe weather can affect operations.

Planning the visit

Wear comfortable shoes and carry water for the climb. Do not stare directly into the monkeys’ eyes, touch them or feed outside the designated area.
