Oshino Hakkai: Spring Ponds Below Mount Fuji

Our visit

The final stop on our day tour was Oshino Hakkai. We walked among clear ponds, wooden houses and food stalls in a village that has become a popular visitor stop.

Cloud cover denied us the familiar photograph of Fuji above the rooftops. The ponds and village atmosphere still justified the stop, provided one does not expect an empty, quiet place.

What to know

The eight ponds are fed by Mount Fuji snowmelt filtered naturally through layers of lava. They form part of the World Heritage property associated with Mount Fuji.

Planning the visit

Stay on marked paths and do not enter the water. Business hours vary, and the area is busiest around midday and on weekends.
