Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna

The Freud Museum is at Berggasse 19, where the founder of psychoanalysis lived and worked until he was forced to leave Vienna in 1938. We arrived with high expectations in 2018 but left disappointed. Only a small part of the home was presented as we had imagined, and the explanations and objects did not come together into a satisfying visit for us.

The museum was subsequently renovated and expanded, reopening in 2020. It now includes the family’s private rooms and Sigmund and Anna Freud’s practices, alongside exhibitions on psychoanalysis, the building and family life. Our impressions predate that expansion; we have not visited the new displays. Check current exhibitions and visiting information and decide according to your interests.
