The National Museum of Scotland
The National Museum of Scotland was a wonderful surprise. I expected to move quickly through nature and science and save most of my time for Scottish history, but the explanations, demonstrations and games made me lose track of time. After three and a half hours I had seen only part of what I wanted. Come without a tight schedule and choose a few areas that interest you rather than trying to cover everything.
Among the exhibits is Dolly, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. The museum normally opens daily from 10am to 5pm, with free admission to the permanent collections. Special exhibitions and events may require separate tickets. Check displays, the museum map and opening hours before coming.
The history galleries are full of stories and items. I think that visiting such a museum is essential to understand the roots and values of the local society. Moreover, it helps to better understand all the other sites you visit, so I'm usually trying to visit the local museum as soon as possible.
