Montreal Museum of Fine Arts: a visit full of variety

Paintings, ceramics, objects and exhibitions across several buildings.

The Museum of Fine Arts felt enormous. In our visit we moved through four different buildings with varied exhibitions, explored thoroughly and enjoyed it very much.

Founded in 1860, the museum grew over time through collections and donations. Its multi-building arrangement reflects that gradual expansion rather than a single collection installed all at once.

The mix of Quebec and Canadian art, international works and decorative arts gives the visit breadth. Everyday objects and crafted pieces can be as interesting as the paintings.

This is not a small museum for a quick room or two. Get a map and understand the connections between buildings before deciding how much to cover.
The variety was a major part of the pleasure. Our photographs include paintings, musical instruments and ceramics; moving between different kinds of displays kept the visit engaging.

We chose to explore extensively, but visitors with less time can choose sections. It is better to enjoy a selection than rush through everything.
Temporary exhibitions may have different dates or ticket arrangements. Check the current programme for the day you intend to visit.
After several hours indoors, a walk in Old Montreal provides a welcome change of atmosphere.
