Old Montreal after dark: lively streets and illuminated façades

A cheerful evening walk with plenty going on.

Old Montreal was very lively in the evening, with plenty of places open and a cheerful atmosphere. We enjoyed wandering rather than following a formal tour.
The older buildings, illuminated façades and places to eat give the streets a different character after dark.

The area includes Bonsecours Market and Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel, both visible in our photographs. These references are to their exteriors, not to an interior visit.

Bonsecours Market opened in 1847 as a public market and also served civic and political purposes, including as city hall. Its illuminated dome belongs to a building with more than a decorative role in the city’s history.

An evening here works well after time at the Botanical Garden or Fine Arts Museum, offering a change from a structured daytime visit.
A guided walk is a separate option for visitors who want more explanation. We explored independently and are not describing participation in one of the advertised tours.
Practical notes
Our visit was an independent evening walk.
