Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto: beneath the sharks

An interactive visit, with marine life and a look at the systems behind it.
We found Ripley’s Aquarium enjoyable and very interactive. It was more than a sequence of tanks to glance at before moving on.

Our highlight was the shark tunnel. Watching the animals beside us and overhead creates a sense of being inside the scene rather than looking through a small window.

Beyond the sharks, we enjoyed the fish and jellyfish displays. These offered a change of pace and different colours and details to focus on.

We also liked the explanation of the systems behind the scenes, including water filtration and temperature control. It adds another layer to understanding how an aquarium works.

The marine displays do not simply draw seawater from neighbouring Lake Ontario, which is freshwater. Preparing and maintaining suitable water conditions is a substantial part of the work behind the exhibits.
In mid-August the aquarium was busy with children. Expect a popular family attraction rather than a quiet museum visit.
It is beside the CN Tower. We looked at the tower from outside; we did not go up it, so our own account should not be confused with a combined observation-deck visit.
