Churchill War Rooms

The Churchill War Rooms are a museum in London, England, dedicated to the life and work of Sir Winston Churchill during World War II. The Churchill War Rooms were located in the basement of the Treasury building, where Churchill and his government conducted much of the United Kingdom's military and political operations during the war.

The museum comprises several rooms, including Churchill's office, the Cabinet War Room, the Map Room, and the Transatlantic Telephone Room. Each room is carefully preserved to look just as it did during the war, with original artifacts and documents on display.

Visitors to the Churchill War Rooms can learn about Churchill's leadership during the war, including his famous speeches and the crucial decisions he made that helped shape the war's outcome. The museum also features interactive exhibits and multimedia displays that help bring the history of the war to life.

Our recommendation comes with reservations. We felt the exhibition strongly emphasised Churchill’s greatness while giving less space to critical discussion. We would have liked more consideration of his position on India and questions about British leaders’ knowledge of the Holocaust and efforts to rescue Jews. This is our response to the exhibition we saw, not a claim about the curators’ intentions.

We found the War Rooms fascinating for anyone interested in the Second World War. Admission felt expensive, and carrying a coat and bag without being able to leave them during our visit was uncomfortable. Travel light and check current tickets and visitor instructions on IWM’s website.
