Electricity in Northern Cyprus: Type G Plugs, Voltage and Power Cuts

Pack a British-style Type G adapter for northern Cyprus, not just a two-round-pin continental adapter. Supply is in the 220–240V range at 50Hz. Many modern chargers need only a plug adapter, but every device still needs its own rating check.

Recognising the socket

The usual outlet is Type G, with three rectangular openings and one centred above the other two. Individual wall switches may need turning on before charging begins.

The photographs illustrate the connector type rather than the exact fittings in a particular hotel. A manufacturer’s original UK plug head matches this shape.

Selecting an adapter

A British Type G plug normally fits directly. Continental European round-pin, North American and Israeli plugs require appropriate adapters.

Earth continuity must be maintained for equipment that requires it. Never force the shutters open with a pen or other object to improvise a two-pin connection.

Read the INPUT rating

Supply is in the 220–240V range at 50Hz. An INPUT marking of 100–240V, 50/60Hz includes it.

OUTPUT figures such as 5V for a phone or 20V for a laptop do not establish the charger’s acceptable mains input. Check older or North American equipment carefully for a 110/120V-only rating.

Adapters versus converters

An adapter changes shape; suitable conversion equipment changes voltage. Putting a 110V-only appliance into a British adapter does not make it compatible and can cause damage or danger.

Ask the manufacturer about non-compatible equipment. Hairdryers, kettles and straighteners draw substantial power, so accommodation-provided equipment is often preferable to an inadequate travel converter.

Charging several devices

A reputable multiport charger can serve several phones through one adapter if its power rating is adequate. For a laptop, also check the USB-C output and cable rating.

Avoid chains of adapters and extensions, and never connect heating appliances through a loose adapter. Stop using a connection that becomes unusually hot or smells scorched and notify the property.

Room cards and special outlets

A room-key card may control the electrical circuit. Check whether removing it disconnects the socket you are using instead of assuming the phone will charge while you are out.

A shaver-only outlet is not a supply for a kettle. In a rental apartment, establish whether electricity is included or charged separately under the booking conditions.

Contact the correct electricity operator

The local operator is KIB-TEK, not the south’s EAC. Ask the property whether an interruption affects the room, building or district; KIB-TEK lists its service centre at +90 392 600 0960.

We did not find an active official fault map that can be presented as complete real-time coverage. An empty EAC map says nothing about a northern outage. Restoration estimates from accommodation staff remain estimates.

Backup arrangements

Carry a charged phone power bank for a long outing and store essential addresses and tickets offline. If uninterrupted cooling matters, ask what the property’s generator actually powers rather than assuming every room appliance is covered.

Medical equipment needs a suitable backup plan agreed with the manufacturer and property. Charge an EV only at an authorised suitable facility, not through an improvised lead from a bedroom outlet.
