Money in Northern Cyprus: Turkish Lira, Cards and the Final Bill

Northern Cyprus uses Turkish lira, but hotels and other tourist businesses may quote in euros or pounds. Establish the quotation currency, settlement currency and exchange rate before comparing prices. The money and tax arrangements are different from those in Larnaca and Paphos.

Recognising the currency

The local currency is the Turkish lira: TRY, TL or ₺. One lira contains 100 kuruş. Banknotes come in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 lira denominations; coins handle smaller change.

Keep a mix of notes for small purchases and transport. Old prices quoted in lira are unreliable budgeting tools because both prices and exchange rates can move.

Lira, euros or pounds?

Many tourist businesses accept euros, pounds and sometimes dollars, but acceptance and exchange rates are not universal. Ask which currency a price uses and how change will be returned.

For a hotel package contracted in euros, establish the final euro total and payment terms. For a lira price, compare any conversion offer with the original amount. The converter here provides an estimate, not a merchant’s guaranteed rate.

Cards and phone wallets

Cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants and established businesses. Carry a backup physical card and some cash in case a terminal fails or your particular card is declined.

Apple Pay and Google Pay depend on the card and terminal being supported. You do not need a local bank account to use your ordinary card; equally, do not assume a Turkish payment app will enrol a visitor with a foreign card.

Cash and exchanging money

Start with a reserve for small expenses and top it up according to use instead of converting your entire budget at once. Needs vary with prepaid accommodation, rental costs and time in villages or at beaches.

Ask an exchange office for the actual lira amount after fees. At an ATM, inspect operator charges, offered conversion and your own bank’s fees. Retain the receipt and confirm the intended currency before accepting.

Taxis, transfers and minibuses

For a booked taxi or transfer, confirm the amount, currency, destination and possible luggage or waiting supplements. Establish card acceptance in advance rather than arriving with only a phone wallet.

Keep small lira notes for local minibuses and ask the fare before boarding. Do not assume a Bolt or Uber account used in the south provides service here. Accommodation staff can arrange a local driver.

Tipping

Check a restaurant bill for service already included. Where it is absent, around 10% for good service is a common gesture, not an automatic surcharge on every purchase.

Round up a taxi fare or tip according to the help provided. Small individual hotel tips are optional. Establish whether a card tip is possible or cash is needed.

Local VAT is a separate system

Local VAT is called KDV. The standard rate is 16%, alongside other bands. Tourist accommodation and certain restaurant services fall in the 5% band, vehicle rental in 10%, while other categories may attract 20% or exemptions.

A mixed bill can contain different rates. Request an itemised receipt rather than applying the Republic of Cyprus’s 19% rate or Turkish VAT rules to everything.

Is the advertised price final?

Before booking a room, vehicle or package, request the total including taxes and compulsory charges. KDV dahil means VAT included; KDV hariç means VAT excluded. Ask when the wording is unclear.

Check meal plans, drinks, transfers, spa access and child supplements. All-inclusive describes a particular package, not unrestricted access to every service at a property.

Do not budget around a tax refund

Do not assume the Republic of Cyprus’s Tax Free paperwork or Türkiye’s refund process applies to a northern purchase. We could not verify a general current visitor-shopping refund route that travellers should rely on.

If a shop offers a refund, obtain written conditions before buying: the refund provider, accepted departure point, documents and fees. Without a clear process, treat the paid price as final.

Deposits and prepaid bookings

For a rental, establish whether the deposit is held or charged, the release process and the required card in the driver’s name. A low hire price need not mean a small card-authorisation requirement.

Keep prepaid hotel and transfer confirmations available offline. Goods carried between the island’s two parts are subject to customs arrangements and restrictions; a shop purchase is not permission to cross with unlimited quantities.
