Saint-Paul-de-Vence: Lanes, Ramparts and Art

After picking up the car we rented through DiscoverCars, we drove to St. Paul de Vance. It was our first stop on Village Day. We parked at the entrance and continued on foot to the walls and alleys, between the stone houses, galleries, and art shops.

The stone houses and entrance to Saint-Paul de Vance

Start from a round out.

They were built by order of Franois I in the 1540s, near the border between Provence and Nice County. The angular protrusions in the wall were designed for protection in an era when cannons were already used. Today it is pleasant to travel here and observe the environment, but in the past this structure had an important military role.

After walking along the walls we entered the alleys. We were held up near fountains, doors and shop windows, and we also noticed the stone pavement. The village is small, but if you like to look at the details, you can spend quite a bit of time there.

St. Paul had more shops and visitors than Tourette-sur-Loup We enjoyed both of them for a different reason: in St. Paul we loved the art and galleries, and in Tourette-sur-Loup we enjoyed the quiet and relaxed strolling.

The Walls and Landscape

From time to time we set out from the alleys to the edge of the village to observe the landscape. On the way we also passed the cemetery and walked the paths and squares paved with stone. The passage from the narrow streets to the lookouts was one of the pleasant parts of the tour.

The Church and the Polon Chapel

We visited the Coligial Church and then the Polon Chapel. The chapel was a pleasant surprise: a small, colorful space, very different from the ancient churches we saw during the trip. We stayed in it for a few minutes, but the art and optimistic atmosphere left an impression on us.

The chapel is named after the artist Jean-Michel Poulon, who designed its decorations as a tribute to the village to which it was connected. It was inaugurated in 2008. The works were designed specifically for it, and it is worthwhile to look at the way they fit into space, not just at each individual work.

We visited the European Heritage Days, so the entrance to the chapel was free of charge. In the routine the visit is paid; before arrival you can find out the Opening hours and ticket prices.

Proceed to the Mag Foundation or the next village

After the cruise we bought a sandwich and went on to The Mag Foundation If you are building a day of villages as long as ours, decide in advance how much time you would like to devote to art, so as not to reach all the next stations under pressure.
