Our visit

In Ginza, luxury shops interested us less than the Mitsukoshi food hall. Its counters displayed sushi, pastries, desserts and prepared dishes with almost museum-like precision.

We bought several items and turned the visit into a small tasting meal. It was an effective way to explore Japanese food without committing to one restaurant or menu.

What to know

Ginza is one of Tokyo’s principal shopping districts. Department stores operate basement depachika food halls selling fresh products, gifts and prepared dishes.

Planning the visit

Visit before closing time for the widest selection and ask where eating is permitted; opening food at the counter or while walking is not always appropriate.
