Hermitage

The Hermitage is much more than rooms filled with art. The Winter Palace, its halls and decoration were magnificent in their own right. The museum holds an enormous collection, only part of which is displayed at any one time, across several buildings and complexes.

The collection was first established by Catherine the Great, who bought art collections from all over Europe. Today the collection includes European art from the 13th-20th centuries, displayed in more than 120 rooms of the Winter Palace and the other buildings: The Small Hermitage, the Old Hermitage, and the General Staff Building.

Different buildings and some exhibitions now have separate ticket categories. Check the official ticket options and confirm the building, date and route covered. Our 2018 arrangement does not establish what a ticket includes today.

We visited the main complex, the General Staff Building across the square and Peter the Great’s Winter Palace. The last was charming, but less essential in our view if time is limited. We bought a two-day ticket, although the abundance eventually became too much for Boaz. Choose a few interests in advance and leave time for breaks.
