James Monroe's Highland

Highland was the estate of James Monroe, the fifth president. Research announced in 2016 identified the foundations of his 1799 main residence and established that the surviving small house is a separate guesthouse from 1818. It was one of the most intriguing stories on our tour.

Today’s visit includes guesthouse exhibits, self-paced exploration and interpretation through the current programme. Check admission and guided options; the format has changed since our visit.
