Senso-ji and Asakusa: Our First Encounter with Tokyo

Our October 2025 visit to Senso-ji and Asakusa, with current visitor information and practical planning tips.

Our visit

After landing and settling in, we went to Asakusa. Walking through Kaminarimon Gate and Nakamise Street became our introduction to Japan. The approach was busy with stalls and visitors, then opened into the broad and impressive temple grounds.

It was our first day after a long flight, so we did not try to cover everything. The slower pace gave us time to notice details, taste a few things and begin adjusting to Tokyo.

What to know

Senso-ji is Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple and is dedicated to Kannon. The grounds are freely accessible, while the main hall follows seasonal opening hours.

Planning the visit

Arrive early for a quieter walk through the shopping street and temple. Asakusa is also pleasant in the evening, after many shops close and the buildings remain illuminated.
