Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad

The monument in Victory Square honours Leningrad’s defenders and the residents who endured the Second World War siege. Lasting from September 1941 to January 1944, the siege claimed hundreds of thousands of civilian lives. The memorial was inaugurated on 9 May 1975.

We arrived in the evening after a slow journey through traffic. The monument was impressive, but the museum below had already closed. Use the pedestrian underpass to access the complex rather than searching for an entrance from the road. Check the museum’s opening information if you want to visit the memorial hall too.
