Westerplatte

Westerplatte was the scene of one of the opening battles of the Second World War. The attack on the Polish outpost began on 1 September 1939, and the defenders held it until 7 September. Their resistance became a symbol even as the invasion advanced elsewhere in Poland.

Some of the barracks' ruins still stand as an open-air museum, alongside explanation plates and the Monument of the Coast Defenders.
