Our visit

From Kyoto we made a day trip to Nara. On the way to the temples we encountered deer moving freely among lawns, paths and visitors.

We bought shika senbei crackers, but quickly learned that the deer can be forceful when they recognize food. The encounter is memorable as long as they are treated as wild animals, not pets.

What to know

Nara Park covers a large area around several of the city’s major sites. Its protected deer are traditionally regarded as sacred messengers.

Planning the visit

Feed only the designated crackers, do not tease the deer and keep maps and papers away from them. Extra caution is needed during mating and fawning seasons.

For a wider route beyond the cities, compare transport and car-rental options in advance and decide what the itinerary actually requires.
