Tōdai-ji and Nara’s Great Buddha

Our October 2025 visit to Tōdai-ji and Nara’s Great Buddha, with current visitor information and practical planning tips.

Tōdai-ji and Nara’s Great Buddha

Our visit

We continued through the park to Tōdai-ji. The entrance gate and Daibutsuden hall established the scale before we reached the immense Buddha inside.

This was one of those places where photographs struggle to convey size. Even after other Japanese temples, the hall and statue felt exceptional.

What to know

The Great Buddha was completed in the eighth century and dedicated in 752. The present hall is an Edo-period reconstruction after earlier buildings were damaged.

Planning the visit

Admission to the hall is charged and hours vary seasonally. Combine it with Nara Park and arrive early, before the main day-tour groups.

For a wider route beyond the cities, compare transport and car-rental options in advance and decide what the itinerary actually requires.
