Vlatadon Monastery in Thessaloniki

Vlatadon Monastery stands in the Upper Town, with views across Thessaloniki towards the sea that make the climb worthwhile. Founded in the 14th century by the brothers Dorotheos and Markos Vlattis, it is the city’s only Byzantine monastery still functioning as a monastery, not its only surviving Byzantine building.

Inside the monastery, they preserve scripts, manuscripts, and a beautiful collection of historically and artistically valuable Byzantine icons.

Combine it with Hosios David Church and a neighbourhood walk. It remains an active monastery: keep noise down and respect areas closed to visitors.
