Things you should know about a trip to Larnaca

Larnaca is a wonderful destination for a trip. Amazing beaches, restaurants, cafes and bars, churches and archeological sites, salt...

Larnaca gave us a lovely mix of the sea, good food and wandering between churches and small museums. We visited in mid-November 2022 and still saw people swimming and sunbathing at Finikoudes Beach. Our days were warm but the afternoons turned cooler, so a light extra layer was useful. That reflects the weather on our visit, not a promise of comfortable conditions in every season.

At the southern end of the Finikoudes promenade stand Larnaca Castle and the Djami Kebir Mosque. At Saint Lazarus Church, we particularly enjoyed the interior and carved iconostasis. Continue exploring the past at the Pierides Museum and the Archaeological Museum, two interesting visits that need not take a whole day.

We discovered the murals on Karaoli Kai Dimitriou Street by chance while walking. We came across Panagia Faneromeni on the way to the Salt Lake, where we walked along part of the eastern shore, not around the entire lake system. Our stretch of trail was exposed to the sun, so bring water and a hat.

At Kastella Beach, we ate at To Varelli across the road from the beach. We ordered lamb chops, fish and salad and enjoyed every bite. We also liked Mackenzie Beach, with its sand and waterfront restaurants. At the Saturday market, we found vegetables, cheese, oil and baked goods. Since our visit, the new Municipal Market complex opened in March 2023. The Saturday farmers’ market takes place in its yard; come in the morning and check the current operating information.

We visited Metropolis Mall for some Sunday shopping. In the evening, Ermou Square was lively and crowded. The first restaurant barely had time for us, but we eventually found a lovely crêperie and finished with two savoury crêpes and one sweet one.

For a guided introduction, the tourism board also lists a free municipal walking tour on Wednesdays. Check the date and meeting point; attraction admission and drinks are not included.

A few things you should know about Larnaca before you arrive.

The airport is close to the city, but your journey time depends on the route and traffic. Cyprus Public Transport route 425 connects the airport, Mackenzie, Finikoudes and the bus station. Check the operator’s route, stops and timetable, especially for the return to the airport. During our 2022 visit, we struggled with stops and information in the PAME app and eventually chose to depart from the central station. This is not a review of the current app version.

Cyprus uses the euro. Most places we visited accepted cards, but some cash was useful. Under the fare policy effective from 3 August 2026, a regular urban single costs €2.70 when bought with cash on the bus, or €2 with a topped-up Motion card; issuing the card costs €5. Night fares differ. Check the current fare and ticket type before travelling.

You can explore the centre without a car. If you are adding trips outside the city, compare rentals on DiscoverCars and read the supplier’s conditions, insurance and excess before booking. Cyprus drives on the left. Take time to familiarise yourself with the car and road, and follow signs and lane markings, especially at junctions and roundabouts.

Pedestrians need to adjust too: on a two-way road, look right first, then left, and keep checking traffic in every direction before and during crossing. Use designated crossings and do not assume drivers will stop. We encountered narrow or obstructed pavements, so plan a manageable walking route if you have a pushchair or suitcase.

Bring an adapter for UK-style Type G sockets. The supply is 230 volts, 50 Hz; check that your appliance supports that voltage too.

Larnaca and Larnaka are two spellings of the same city.

And after all the comments and warnings - Larnaca is a wonderful destination for a vacation and a trip.
